Land trust explores nature's rebound from destruction

A year after the fact, Brimfield's Frank Ruane is still amazed at the power of the tornado, which rolled through several acres of his forest abutting Brimfield State Forest.

"I've sent people photos of this and they say 'Wow,' but it doesn't do it justice," he said. "You have to see it."

On Thursday, July 19, he hosted a couple dozen people seeking to do just that, one of the periodic hikes sponsored by the Opacum Land Trust. In this case, Opacum member and forester Scott Gerrish led it, discussing a variety of forest issues including how the land recovers from such events.
