SOUTHBRIDGE — In an unexpected first act for the newly reorganized School Committee, the panel voted 4-2 to extend Superintendent Eric Ely's contract by two years on Tuesday.

"It means I don't have to be looking for a job anymore," Ely said after the meeting. "We can move forward and accomplish the agenda we have … to improve student achievement."

That was a reference to the widely known fact Ely has been applying for jobs all over the place, including districts in Ohio, Tennessee, Maine and elsewhere in Massachusetts.
